New ASSA Centre: Hermanus Astronomy Club
At the ASSA Council meeting on April 21 it was unanimously decided to welcome the Hermanus Astronomy Club as an official Centre of the Astronomical Society.
The founding meeting of the Hermanus Astronomy Club (HAC) was held on 2008 January 9.
"The Club's activities generated considerable interest in the local community as reflected by the membership which expanded from the initial 15 to 57 during 2008, more than 50 of whom have already renewed their membership for 2009."
Founder member Steve Kleyn donated two telescopes – a 13.1-inch fork-mounted Newtonian and an 11-inch Dobsonian – to the HAC.
Subsequently an Observatory Committee was established to select a site for a new Observatory. The facility will consist of a 3.5-m domed observatory and 20-m amphitheatre to be used for outdoor lectures and presentations. At first, Fernkloof was considered as a location, but the request was turned down by the Hermanus Botanical Society and the Fernkloof Advisory Board. An alternative location, adjacent to Rotary Drive, is currently being considered.
HAC committee members include John Saunders (Chairman), Steve Kleyn (Technical Advisor), Pierre de Villiers (Treasurer), Irene Saunders (Secretary), Pierre Hugo (Auditor & librarian), Jenny Morris (Newsletter editor), Derek Duckitt (IT & website co-coordinator), Johan Retief (Monthly sky maps), and Piet Daneel.
Centre meetings are held on Thursdays at 19:00. Dates for 2009 meetings are: April 30, May 28, June 25, July 23, August 20, September 24, October 22, November 19, and December 17.
